Darren Waller, of ACS, reviews the book for PMLifeline.com

Project Workout by Robert Buttrick, is one of the best-selling project management books available.

The theory behind Project Workout is very closely aligned to the principles behind the PM Lifeline site - the use of Project Management in real-life situations, so it is no great surprise that I found this book as probably the best I have read on the subject.

The 464 page book, published by FT Prentice Hall, has received good reviews elsewhere and comes complete with written and interactive (on the enclosed CD) 'workouts' with exercises, problem posers and techniques to help the reader put the book into practice.

The book is very much aimed at the senior manager and adopts the top-down principle that Project Management can be of most benefit in your organisation if everyone is aiming towards the same goals, with the alignment being controlled by Project Management techniques.

As well as the usual theory found in many books, Robert takes the reader through some detailed real-life examples which really can be compared to situations and issues in your own organisation.

You can use the Project Workout to uncover and implement projects that will drive change and improve the health of your business.

As a practical, hands-on, step-by-step, diagnostic guide for setting up a project and making it happen successfully, it would be difficult to find a better book to recommend.

With the use of case studies from companies such as Cable and Wireless and Hewlett Packard, the book focuses on the critical success factors of any successful project and helps you master the difficulties of implementation, concentrating on both the business/management issues and the sleeves-rolled-up project management of the task itself.

In conclusion - 10 out of 10 ! I strongly recommend that this title should be on any business leader's bookshelf.
