Useful Web Links

The world of project management is expanding rapidly as more and more organisations are breaking free of their functional shackles and realising that working in cross-functional teams is really the smart way to achieve their objectives.  Below I give some hot links to sites you may find useful. If you know of a good one, let me know!

Financial Times

The publishers of the Project Workout. This site includes their innovative "Business Minds" web site, designed to put you in touch with their author experts in many fields of business management.

Business, the Ultimate Resource

Web site for the ground breaking Bloomsbury management reference library for which I contributed the "Project Management" best practice section.

Project Manager Today

In my opinion this is the UK’s best project management monthly and well worth subscribing to. It's of general business interest, looking at project management in the widest sense. They also organise conferences.

The PRINCE

You often hear people quoting Machiavelli's book . . . but have you actually read it? Here is an on line translation.

Office of Government Commerce

Home of the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) which has some 2000 pages of resources for you to pick through, review and adopt!

Managing Successful Programmes (MSP)

Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) is the OGC's structured and flexible framework for managing programmes. Unlike many approaches it makes a clear distinction between programmes and projects. MSP's "programme" is very close to Project Workout's "business programme".

PRINCE2

The official web site for the UK’s popualr, emerging standard methodology. If your are in the UK and working with the public sector, you cannot ignore this. Used wisely, with appropriate tailoring, it can be very effective.

IPMA

International Project Management Association (IPMA)
This is an international body representing about 45 national associations. It is very active in certification, training and conferences and has a very enthusiastic following. This is Europe's “bite back” to the US’s PMI. They claim there is no rivalry, but I'm not so sure!

Association for Project Management

The APM is the UK’s professional body for project management. As yet it has no formal recognition in terms of chartered status. Whilst it started with the traditional heavy engineering style projects it has made great strides to widen its appeal to all industry sectors, including general business projects. Its latest Body of Knowledge (5 edition) is an excellent reference of project management terms.

Project Management Institute (PMI)

This is the formal USA association for professional project managers. It is well established with chapters all over the world. The USA has a different approach to project management than that which is emerging in the UK and Europe, there being very little emphasis on the importance of sponsorship.

PMLifeline

A new “not for profit” site which shows some promise. Well worth signing up for.

4pm.com

An American site with some interesting articles and links. Well worth a look!

projectmanagement.com

A new project site with not a lot so far but some interesting links. This may be one to  keep your eye on. Only time will tell. It all looks a bit "MS Project" dominated so far and we all know projects are far bigger than software!

ProjectSmart

This was one recommended to me by Duncan Haughey at Unilever, with some interesting reviews and articles.

Human Systems Knowledge Network

A benchmarking consortium run by Terry Cooke-Davis. For corporate members only. If you want to benchmark, try contacting them - they have networks in USA, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Thomsett

A challenging Australian consultant whose web site contains many interesting and thought provoking articles and book recommendations. Well worth a visit.

The Virtual Business School

Led by Eddie Obeng, an inspirational source of “new world” thinking, to challenge you and lead you forward.
